Sofia Yala

Available for commissions and collaborations

Sofia Yala (born in Lisbon in 1994) is an Angolan/Portuguese photographer. With an academic background in African Studies and Anthropology, the artist obtained a MA in Film & Photography from the University of Derby in 2021. Yala's artwork delves into the exploration of archival material alongside unexpected encounters in life. Their art conveys storytelling by incorporating different times, textures, and layers. The work of Sofia Yala reflects on the (dis)construction of identity as a diasporic or transatlantic body in our vast and intricate world. While photography serves as the foundation of their artistic process, Sofia also enjoys experimenting and presenting their work using other formats and compositions.

The artist has coined their practice as a hybrid, viewing it as an ongoing endeavor that is never truly complete. By rethinking and revisiting the past, Sofia leaves room for further reflection in the future without compromising the essence of the present. They pay meticulous attention to details such as textures and combinations to reshape memories and experiences.
